Variational approxímations to the 2pσu and 2pπr wave functions of the hydrogen molecule ion

Abstract

It is shown that trial wave functions for the 2pσu and 2pπr states of wit three variational parameters, separable in elliptic coordinates give excellent results for the energy eigenvalues as functions of the internuclear coordínate. It is also seen that there are two mínima for the energy as a function of the parameters. Earlier results for the same trial function used for the 2pσu state in error because the optimízation has not always been carried out for the absolute minímum.

Se muestra que las funciones de onda de prueba para los estados de ingenio 2pσu y 2pπr con tres parámetros variacionales, separables en coordenadas elípticas, dan excelentes resultados para los autovalores de energía como funciones de la coordenada internuclear. También se ve que hay dos mínimas para la energía en función de los parámetros. Los resultados anteriores para la misma función de prueba utilizada para el estado 2pσu son erróneos porque la optimización no siempre se ha llevado a cabo para el mínimo absoluto.
