Resumen

Tesis para optar al título de Magister en Ciencia y Tecnología de Materiales
Zinc-aluminum alloys containing silicon, copper and reinforcing particles of silicon carbide were cast and analized. The analyses were done performing hardness test (HB), quantitative metallography, wear and dimensional stability tests. Composition analysis of the different alloying elements along the cast samples were done by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EDAX (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Microanalysis). The wear tests were performed in a pin-on-disc wear system under dry and lubricated conditions and loads of 3,5 and 8 kg. at a linear velocity of 2,0 m/s during one hour. Alternatively, a Dow-Corning equipment, model LFW1, (ASTM D2714-68 y G77-97) was used, also under dry and lubricated conditions with a load of 27 kg, at a speed of 0,367 m/s for one hour. Several correlations between properties, structures and compositions were found, showing an increase in hardness with an increase in the volume fraction of SiC particles. The alloys tested for dimensional stability during 1000 hr at 165 +- 2,5 degree C were very stable. The samples tested for wear under dry condition at 5 and 8 kg, show high surface plastic deformation and transfer of elements between the wear disc, the sample and the debris.
