dc.description.abstractUntil about 1 5 years ago, there were very few developments in the field of High Strength Low Alloy Steels. MiId Steel, the main material, was regarded as possessing fairly simple metallurgical structure, and as such capable of little improvement. The sudden disappearance of all-welded "Liberty" ships during the latter part of the war, and the fact that they broke in two in harbour, altered the whole approach to the subject. Impact fracture behaviour became of major importance, as also did weldability.
