One of the most important factors in the development of new technologies such as space exploration and nuclear power, is pressure vessel integrity. In considering the adequacy of existing practice for these new applications, it is prudent to take into account the differences which may exist in service conditions and consequences of failure. The main differences between say nuclear reactor pressure vessels and conventional vessels is as follows (a) Because of the much greater consequences of failure in the case of nuclear reactor vessels there is a need for much greater reliability. (b) Operational inspection is important in detecting defects v;hich could otherwise develop in service and cause a major rupture. Approximately 90% of all failures in conventional plant are detected during such inspection, yet most nuclear reactor pressure vessels constructed up to this time are not directly accessible for periodic inspection.
